Having a Baby at…Baylor All Saints

mariapokluda hospital birth, What to Expect Series

Are you considering having  your baby at Baylor All Saints in Fort Worth, Texas? Great Expectations Doulas believe that when expecting families match their goals and desires with a hospital or other place that supports those goals then labor is almost always a good experience. Since hospitals vary so much in what they offer, our “What to Expect” series explores how Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton area hospitals serve expecting families.  The series is great for those who already know where baby is arriving, but want to know a few more details as they prepare for their labor day and for those still considering their options.

Today we talk about BAYLOR All SAINTS (Baylor Scott and White All Saints)

Baylor All Saints is located just south of downtown Fort Worth. Because of its location just off several major highways, it is within a 20 minute drive of many parts of Arlington, Grand Prairie, Keller, North Richland Hills and even the Mid Cities

Parking – It is easy, free and convenient to park in the garage. The garage itself is right next to the entrance to Labor and Delivery. Labor and Delivery is on the first floor as well.

Food – The cafeteria is large and there is a Starbucks right next to Labor and Delivery. The Great Expectations Doulas usually eat at Torchy’s Tacos when we attend births at Baylor All Saints, but we hear the hospital food is good.

Rooms– Large and relatively new. There is even a little room to the side that can be curtained off for privacy.

NICU info – Level 3

Breastfeeding Support –  Baylor All Saints has average breastfeeding support for the area.

Can you get in the tub or shower during labor? There are no tubs in the labor rooms,  however we have been told you may bring an inflatable tub in to use during labor. If this is something you want, ask your provider if they are OK with you bringing in a birth pool. The rooms do have very nice showers.

Will your healthy baby go to the nursery?  Probably not, as it is not a standard and in most cases your baby will stay with you after delivery.

How will you be monitored?  If you do not request intermittent monitoring, the default is probably going to be continuous monitoring. However, requests for intermittent monitoring are happily accommodated if no other need for extra monitoring exists.  Baylor All Saints does have telemetry units that can be used to walk around your room or even around the halls of Labor and Delivery.

Is Telemetry monitoring available? Telemetry monitoring is available and works well.

Saline Lock available? Yes

Does All Saints offer Family Center Cesareans?   None of our clients have had a Family Centered Cesarean and our doulas have not been allowed back to the OR for a Cesarean delivery. However we hear rumors that this is happening so ask your provider. If people keep asking, it is going to happen eventually, especially since this is already standard procedure at competing hospitals.

Is Baylor All Saints VBAC friendly?  To date, our doulas have not attended a successful VBAC at Baylor All Saints – and we attend a lot of VBACs. This hospital has made huge strides in providing mother friendly care, so we hope this too will improve, but right now we have to say this is not a VBAC friendly location. Will the nurses at Baylor All Saints laugh at me if I want to take my placenta home? No.  They are very helpful! Read more on placentas and Baylor All Saints.
